In current automotive development, the area of light and visibility plays a central role intersecting design, comfort and safety. While the primary focus for a long time was on providing the best possible illumination of the road situation, lighting technology today plays a key role in giving the vehicle its unmistakable character. The signature of front and rear lights thus offers a high recognition value in both daytime and nighttime driving situations.

 

The ability of light to convey moods and emotions means that its targeted deployment in vehicle interiors is also becoming increasingly important. Both as a method of styling and for purely pragmatic reasons. As a result, ambient and functional lighting are becoming increasingly complex – a trend that will continue with a view to autonomous driving.

We are meeting these growing demands with innovative concepts and lighting components. We have specifically strengthened our expertise in this area, not least through the addition of our subsidiary EDL Rethschulte in 2015.

Service life, energy efficiency, color temperature, temperature behavior and the integration of intelligent components are decisive factors in the development of modern lighting elements. On the way to optimum results in the areas mentioned, we also rely in particular on current simulation technology and software.

Even at an early stage in the development of headlamps and rear lights, our analyses thus enable extensive conclusions to be drawn with regard to the distribution of luminance and temperature as well as flow behavior.

Lighting simulations

Exterior: headlights, taillights, fog lights, direction indicators, exterior mirror & license plate lights | Interior: interior lighting elements, for example reading lamps, interior door trim and other ambience lighting | Night driving simulations to represent real driving situations | Simulation of photometric and physical measured variables | Simulation of imaging optics

Real-image simulations can be used to evaluate different lighting elements under natural conditions. Detailed beam path calculations and installation space investigations guarantee an optimal lighting design:

  • Appearance of illuminated and self-illuminated objects in different environments with reflections, shadows and transparent elements.
  • Distortion of the view when looking through glazing (example: view through windshields & cockpit windows at different head positions and angles)

We use state-of-the-art simulation technology to calculate temperature distribution and flow behavior:

  • Simulation of thermodynamic variables in parts and components, for example in headlights and other lighting elements
  • Condensation / dew formation and defrosting
  • Icing and de-icing
  • Thermal loading of components in circuits
  • Simulation of incident and ambient air flow in vehicles, parts, components and structures
  • Simulation of fluid dynamics in aerodynamic environments (example: water on vehicle surfaces)

Our latest findings in micro-optics technology and 3D projection result in light graphics with high contrast and utmost precision. In addition, our in-house research also applies to the coupling of light into extremely long and thin light guides – with consistently high homogeneity.
