The classic, self-supporting body-in-white structures made of steel are still very common in terms of high volumes, costs and production cycles. However, modern structures are increasingly being developed in hybrid and sandwich designs, with the focus on a larger number of vehicle variants and lower volumes per variant. Alternative materials such as aluminum, magnesium and CFRP/GFRP are being used. With regard to the variability of a car body, solutions are also being found in the form of profile-intensive tubular frame concepts.
